You may be under the impression that only not for profit organizations or education systems qualify for grants, and that is true for federal government grants. However, there are also local grants such as state and city small business grants. They are usually given to small businesses that will help to improve the local economy. Business grants might also be used for “revolutionary” ideas like new energy sources or improved technology. If your business does anything positive for the community, you might find yourself eligible to receive a government grant. What you end up doing with your grant is ultimately up to you, although the money you receive must be used for improving or creating your business in some way. If you are just starting up your business, you can use small business grants to buy the materials you need as well as rent a place to set up your business. It can also be put towards business licenses and paying employees until you get a steady income. If you already have a business started but need to make improvements to get customers coming in, you can use your grant money to make repairs and even redecorate in such a way that appeals to your customers. Anything you decide to do with your money will need to be written down so that the government can see what you are doing with their money should they request documentation.
